Annual numbers on the U.S. scrap recycling industry suggest metals are carrying the load while electronics and plastics are sectors to watch.

According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries’ 2014 annual report , the U.S. scrap market is now an $87 billion industry that leads to the recycling of more than 140 million tons of material every year.

ISRI’s report suggests ferrous metals continues to account for the most activity, with nearly 85 million tons of U.S. iron and steel, valued at $26.3 billion, recycled in 2014. While less than 14 million tons of non-ferrous metals were recycled during the year, their value reached $43 billion, the report states.
